Overall Results
Overall, my goal was simply to read. And I read. A lot. It was eye-opening, and I discovered a lot about myself in this process.
I discovered I’m a marathoner, not a sprinter. I need space and time to digest what I’m reading. To that respect, people who read the same books I am at around the same time are my favorite so I can discuss ideas with them.
I discovered that I read a lot of diverse material. Previously, I would have told you I have a very slim interest in books I read. After looking at the books that I willingly chose to read, I can’t say that anymore. I can say that I avoid fantasy and historical fiction. But that’s about it.
I learned that I listen to books more than I read them. Thirty-five of the titles listed were audio books I listened to on my commute to and from work. It’s a great way to get my mind thinking in the morning and to wind down from work on the way home. It also helps distract me from the traffic.
I learned that it’s stressful if I’m behind a self-set goal. Until about halfway through the year, I was 8 books behind my target, and it was hard to read because I knew that I had to in order to reach that goal, but one book didn’t really put a dent in the pile.
I learned to put books down. There were three books that I absolutely could not stand, and I decided to put down, even though it meant that I’d have to read a whole extra book in order to meet my goal. I’m so good at pushing through things that learning not to do things I don’t like for fun was a big deal, and very liberating. It didn’t matter that I had to add a few books on, my sanity was worth it.
I learned I need to read more books written by ethnic authors. I did fairly well splitting my demographic between male and female authors, with 21 females and 24 males. But with 36 white authors and 9 people of color, I need to do better. So next year, along with my goal to get through 10 classics, which is outside of my #50in52, I’m going to focus my attention on minority authors, because their voice is important.
And there you have it folks, my #50in52 and goal for next year!
P.S. I’d love suggestion of titles written by people of color and other minorities, thanks!

Oh my gosh! Your list of books is so awesome. People write about money all of the time, but what you have made time to cram into your head has made me so jealous!!! More than money posts ever do! There are so many books here that I have been meaning to read but haven’t made it to….yet! You’re an inspiration.
Awww, thanks so much!! I’m feeling so far behind with reading right now, that it’s hard to stop and smell the metaphorical roses of what I’m actually engaging with. But the books that I’ve chosen to read this year have been AMAZING, and I’m so glad that I’m taking time to read them. 🙂 I’m hoping to do another write up soon.
[…] right on track to finish the challenge, which is good. Last year, I spent the last half of the year playing serious catch-up. This year, I’m really trying to be […]
Love that you shared the types of authors, male versus female! Such a eye opening persepective!
It really, really was. And it helped shape my reading goals for 2019.
Wow, that’s amazing! I love that you read such a diverse selection of books, and also how many of them were audio books. What a game changer!
Audiobooks are a SERIOUS game changer! I love my audible account. It’s wonderful.
Amazing job reading so many books! Surprisingly, I’ve only read two of these books, number 4 and 8! I really like that you analysed the authors and kinds of books you read, I find that super interesting. I’ll have to do the same at the end of this year and see what patterns I notice ????
I really loved finding the patterns of what I was reading. And how diverse the literature I read was in some ways but not in others. The whole process was enlightening.
Interesting that you shared the types of authors, male versus female, etc never even thought about that when it comes to what I am reading
It was definitely eye opening, and it’s really caused me to try and curate my selection better so that I can articulate a broader author experience.
