one month. one change. kitchen edition.

It’s time to announce next year’s theme for one month. one change. And it’s kitchen edition! one month. one change. was a series that I attempted to start this year, but didn’t stay dedicated. In 2019, that’s going to change. I’ve spent the last few weeks brainstorming and coming up with plans to make next year the year of good food. For starters, I’ve detailed the theme of each month.

January – PREP / MAKE THAT WISH LIST

So I’m actually ahead of this step because of the move, but basically, I want to inventory the kitchen, put together a list of tools I’m going to need for the rest of the year. For instance, I don’t have a bread maker or ice cream maker, which I want later. I don’t have to purchase them yet. But I just be aware that it might be a good idea to start looking for good deals.

February – CROCK POT THE HELL OUT OF LIFE

I want to ease into the project slowly, and crock pots are a great way to do this. My goal is to make a different crock pot meal for dinner on the work days. I don’t want to overwhelm myself in the kitchen if I don’t have to. On Saturday and Sunday, we will have leftovers (or junk food day!). We’ll also look through the recipes to see which ones we keep and which we get rid of. It’s a chance to look for recipes for the upcoming week, put together a grocery list, and buy all the ingredients. I don’t ever want to be in the middle of the recipe going oh no, I need this and this!

March – ODE TO THE POTATOES

Since crock pots are basically dump and go, I want to spice it up my next month, not that spuds are particularly spicy, but I just wanted a chance to  mess around with a food I’m comfortable cooking. It’s more about seeing what new and exciting things I can make. Also, it’s not strictly potatoes but also yams and starches of the like. Because I’m not sure I could stomach 20 potato dishes, as enthralling as they are.

April – FASTING (no dairy, wine, meat, eggs, or olive oil)

For religious reasons, my husband and I fast during a portion of the year. In 2018, I wasn’t prepared to handle such a drastic dietary change. We kinda failed. This year, I want to be actively thinking and planning out recipes that will fit within our restrictions and better observe our religious practices, that way I have my kitchen stocked and ready to go! I’m hoping also to try and make some of the ethnic fast friendly food served at our parish, although I’m not sure how it’s going to turn out.

May – BREAKFASTS & BBQS

This was originally going to focus on packed lunches, something that I’m notoriously bad at. However, after a conversation with the hubby and our priest, I decided to change it as a celebration for having completed the 40 day Lenten fast. Enter–all the meat!

Because I’m not a huge meat eater, I also added breakfasts, so that we could have 20 new meals, but I wouldn’t be inundated with barbecue, something I’m not hugely fond of. I know, my Texas roots just groaned! This is also a month where my husband wants to shine. We’re hoping that his dad will teach him the art of the grill if we go over on a Sunday or two. It’s more outdoorsy than in the kitchen, but it’ll do! Haha.

June – SALAD SEASON

The summer months are excruciatingly hot in California, and I never want to cook in the heat. Yet, that doesn’t mean that I can avoid and three entire months of the challenge. So the summer months are lighter, and start with salad. I want to be the kind of person that eats salad, but I’m not really. Ironic, because I used to be. This is a month for me to go back to my roots (pun intended), and gorge on lovely forage (as long as there’s not an e coli outbreak in the greens again!).

July – MIXED DRINKS

While my husband and I aren’t boozy by any means, I want to know how to make a good mixed drink. July seemed like the perfect month to try. My goal is to focus on one alcohol type a week (ie vodka one week, gin another) and see what kind of drinks I can make (and make well) over the month. I’m also making infused waters, a series of summer teas, and other healthier drinks during this month. It’s kind of one size fits all approach to drinking.

August – FROZEN FIESTA

Keeping in theme with not the not food heavy months of summer, August seemed like a perfect chance to test out frozen things – like smoothies, ice cream, and popsicles. This is one of the months I’m assuming I’ll need equipment for, but I’m not positive yet.

September – FANCY CAKES

September is my BIRTHDAY MONTH! And because I’m extra, I’m devoting myself to making one super fancy (like the ones that call for lavender petals and orange zest fancy) cake a week. It seems like a fun way to spend six hours in the afternoon.  Plus, I get a delicious (potentially disastrous) cake out of it. Oh, and I’ll need to buy a cake pan for this, because all we own is a pie pan.

October – FOREIGN FOOD FEST

My friend told me that I should devote October to things that scare me in the kitchen. While I’m not super under-confident in cooking, I haven’t done a lot of foreign foods. I haven’t decided if I’m going to break this up into one food family a week, or if I’m going to pick and choose random ethnic dishes throughout the month. I know for sure though, that Brazilian Cheesy Bread is on the list, after that, it’s still in the planning phase.

November – HOLIDAY TREATS

This is my husband’s birthday month, and it’s also a chance for us to get more festive and I felt that my cooking should reflect this. Cookies, candies, pies, (maybe a ham and a turkey, because I’ve never made either of those before) are all things that I’m going to be making this month. I haven’t decided if it’s going to be like September, where I dedicate my weekends, or if it’s going to be like the other months, where I have a recipe a day. More to come in this planning phase.

December – BREAD AND SOUPS

This is another fasting month for us, which means that breads and soups are a great option. It’ll be another month where I need to buy something – namely a bread maker, but I think it’ll be worth the purchase. My mom used to make bread for us growing up and it is one of my favorite smells. And when we go over to the in-laws, Hubby’s dad, quite frequently, has homemade bread sitting on the counter. It’s something that we both grew up with, and it’s something we both enjoy. Plus, it’s a great way to engage in our religious fast while still enjoying good food!

Blogging goal – FINIS

My hope is to devote one or two posts a month to this task, just to check in and see what I’m doing, where I’ve done well, where I’ve failed. I’ll also be linking out to all of the different recipes I tried during that month, potentially with a short review. While this isn’t directly tied into finance, it’s tied into proper living, which I think improves overall health. Here’s to the upcoming year of discoveries in the kitchen!

Any tweaks or suggestions? A great recipe you want me to try? I’d love to hear about it. Drop it in the comments below.

Here’s a link to a whole chicken in the crock pot. https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/slow-cooker-rotisserie-chicken-recipe/ Pretty good, plus it might help later on down the road with other cooking goals. Having cooked chicken is great for soup, pot pie, enchiladas, sandwiches, salads, and so much more.

There is a great no kneed bread recipe I like to make that does not need a bread maker. Its basically a mix and ignore for 8-12 hours type thing. If you get closer to the month or want to try bread making out pretty easy before December rolls around.

    • Moriah Joy on January 16, 2019 at 3:32 pm

Oh that sounds so nice! I’ll have to look for one like that.

I do have a bread maker, you are welcome to have, if you don’t mind a used one. Just let me know when you are ready.

    • Moriah Joy on January 2, 2019 at 10:20 am

Sweet! That would be awesome. Definitely don’t mind a used one. 😀
