I Have An Announcement: We’re Worthless Now!
If you follow me on Twitter, this is old news. But if you don’t, well you should start, but also I HAVE SOME NEWS FOR YOU! Over the last several months (okay, since sometime last year), I’ve been patiently tracking my net worth. Itching for the moment we hit that illusive positive number on Personal Capital. It’s been a journey. But WE FINALLY DID IT!
Look at that beautiful, positive number! (excuse the crappy photo. I took a picture of my computer screen to send to Angela from Tread Lightly, Retire Early and Purple from A Purple Life, and didn’t bother to grab a nice screen grab in time for this post, and I wanted the most authentic Zero Day number). It’s so pretty I could cry. Actually, I did cry, haha. And then I woke my husband up by jumping on the bed repeatedly. He was… not amused. But 100% worth it to drag his still sleepy butt out of bed and to the computer screen to show off that glorious, glorious positive number. He smiled, hugged me, and went back to bed. I mean, who can blame him, if it were my middle of the night, I would have done the same exact thing. I also shouted to Twitter, because well, Twitter knows how to have a party.
Y’all. I did the thing!!! WE ARE NOW NO LONGER IN THE NEGATIVE! pic.twitter.com/r6Buz26FLQ — Moriah Joy (@morjoysol2615) June 9, 2019
It took a bit longer to celebrate properly, because well… We had to prep. We ended up inviting some friends over, setting up a four course meal (salad, dinner, desert, DRINKS!). It was lovely. And Ms. FOGO over at From One Geek to Another reminded me to take pictures, so that’s why I have any photo evidence at all (although, yes, I forgot to get the classic hold champagne flutes and toast photo because I am the worst! And I was so in the moment that pictures were only a whisper in the background. I’m happy I got the ones that I did, and by the way, we ate steak (not pictured). It was good.). She’s also been a HUGE zero day champion for me. And has cheered me every step of the way. It’s been wonderful.

We also did some decorating that I’d put off until this moment as a celebration tactic. I’d been slowly collecting pieces I adored and storing them in a box for today. It was a whole exciting process. My BFF flew out one weekend, and we went thrift store shopping for just this purpose (well, and to buy clothes, but more on that in a different post). I ended up with four paintings that worked great, and two I love, but don’t know where to put yet. We’re keeping them tucked away in storage while I figure it out.

We also bought a patio set that I’d been eyeing since March. Thanks in part to some internet prodding from Penny over at She Picks Up Pennies. And let me tell you, it was probably the best purchase I’ve made this summer. The table was expensive $135, but the joy that it brings and the way it fills out the space makes me know we made the right choice. I almost didn’t buy it because you know #frugality, so I’m so glad to have folks in my corner who let me know that it’s okay to spend money on things you enjoy and have been thinking about for three months. As an aside, I’m so glad I bought it when I did, because it was the last table set left. And I think I would have regretted it. We’ve already spent so much time outdoors that we haven’t been spending because we didn’t have a sitting area. Definitely a good choice for us!

Overall, I’m so happy with the way we celebrated. It was special and wonderful and lovely. We’d actually been saving the champagne from my birthday party last year. Said BFF from above gave me two bottles of very wonderful liquid gold. We drank one for my 21st, and I’ve been saving the second for a momentous occasion. This counts. She’s also been my IRL money buddy that I met in my pre-Twitter AND pre-Blogging days. So it felt super special to incorporate her into our milestone even if she couldn’t be there to celebrate.
It really takes a bunch of people to reach financial milestones. Obviously, my husband and I have to do the hard work of making the money, and I have to do the harder work of budgeting, but having people celebrate along the way, and keep pushing you to get there when your goals seem so out of reach has been one of my favorite things about the blogging community in general. Like all places on the internet, it has it’s warts, but mostly, I’ve found my people. <3 <3 <3
Here’s to a positive net worth, and a great community to share in the celebration.

So cool!!! Congratulations on the milestone. It’s a big one.
Thanks! I’m so excited.
I’m late to the official celebration but I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!
THANKS! I’m so happy, too. It was SUCH A JOURNEY.
Big congrats to you!!! I have been hearing about this post and I’m glad I finally made it over to check it out. You are so funny.
I’m glad you are enjoying your patio set btw. Nice choice! I have a $90 massage coming up. I’m feeling guilty about it but I need to let that go and enjoy treating myself once in awhile…
Thanks! Glad you made it on over and I charmed you with my weird sense of humor. That’s always a plus.
And yay! For your massage. 10/10 worth the money. Don’t feel guilty. Think of it like a super fancy drs appointment where all your muscles get to relax. That’s what I had to do before my first massage so I didn’t have a wave of guilt telling me I shouldn’t have booked it. They’re wonderful, though. So enjoy it!
Huge congrats! I will always remember when I hit that day! Love how you celebrated it and please keep on celebrating all the next milestones to come.
I’m glad people pushed me to celebrate it. It was so worth it!
Haha, nice. Congrats on being worthless!!! Next up – valuable? Worthy? Not sure what the opposite is, but you’re clearly on your way. 😉
Bahaha, you crack me up! Up next, hopefully is a) add a mortgage and b) funnel income towards student loans and mortgage to become c) entirely debt free! So we’re about to go back down to the “darn it, I’m in the red again”. But we’ll be smarter about it this time (hello, house hacking side hustle).
Congratulations, that’s awesome! Glad you celebrated in style and that you allowed yourself the patio set. It’ll be around for years, so you’ll more than get your money’s worth out of it.
I wouldn’t have celebrated (or even written the post), if people hadn’t encouraged me to. Props to such a great community.
As for the patio set, I feel like we’ve already gotten our money’s worth out of that baby. I love it so much. It completes the space. It’s quirky and fun. Plus, both my husband and I like it (a rarity in this household). So I’m definitely going to cherish it!
Congratulations! Zero Day!
Thanks! So excited we’re finally here!
I am so stinking happy for you!! And I love that you did it up and celebrated right. Looking back I wish I’d done that for my student loan payoff.
It was so fun!! We still bought clearance eat and cooked it ourselves. So i think for loan payoff, we might go somewhere $$$. It was a super special day. And I am happy the house is decorated now. 🙂
Congratulations!!!
THANKS! Very pumped about it. 🙂
I’m so proud of myself for actually figuring out how to embed the tweets. Now… I need to figure out how to make the pictures show up IN the blog post, instead of just tossing my readers a link, but LOOK I’m slowly less of a blogger NEWB! AND you were able to catch up on my Twitter shenanigans. Win Win!
Yay! Congratulations!
THANKS!!
Hooray!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I somehow missed most those tweets, but I have corrected that! 🙂
Nowhere to go but up! Congrats!
Yup! (Until we find our dream house and land a pesky mortgage. ????????)
