12 Themes of Fun: How I’m Structuring My Experiment
I’ve decided to tackle my Year of Fun (how creative of a name) by thematically trying out different types of fun. I want to focus in on different types of fun because it helps me limit what I’m going to be doing for a given month. I have serious decision fatigue, so a plethora of options isn’t going to be the best option for me.
I haven’t quite decided which month will house which type of fun. But here’s my list:
Family Friendly
These are things that I can do with my bonus kiddo. She’s 3, so I imagine it will be a lot of finger painting, bubbles, and zoo trips. We have her every Thursday. So for this month, I will devote Thursdays to my day of play.
Friend Centered
I know that I enjoy social activities. So I’ll devote this month to getting out and being social. Things like throwing a dinner party or going to an escape room would allow me to be a social butterfly. Someone even suggested I host a milkshake and board game night! That sounds so fun.
Solitary
One of the things I want to accomplish with this project is to get more comfortable with myself. So I’m going to devote time to solitary activities. Reading, listening to music, and dancing in my bedroom. I might even do social activities – like taking a dance class – but alone.
Outdoor
I live in Texas, and we have some amazing wildlife sanctuaries, nature parks, conservatories, arboretums, and more that I haven’t explored before. I can go hiking, fishing, sun tanning. I might even go to the beach (okay that’s a stretch – I live 8 hours from the beach).
Indoor
Because I feel the need for symmetry, I’ll also be doing indoor activities. Latte art, crafting, swimming (because our pool is indoors), going to the gym… I’m not sure what else could go here, but I’m open to ideas y’all have!
Old
As a trauma baby and semi-pro athlete in high school, I didn’t really learn to have fun. As a kid, that kept me safe. As an adult, it’s really put a damper on my life. The goal here is to dig back to what I enjoyed doing as a kid – and go from there. So amusement parks, swinging, roller blading, riding my bike while listening to music.
New
I’m bad at trying new things. I automatically think I’m going to be bad at them and then I just don’t try. This month I’ll be going out of my comfort zone and trying new things, like pottery, glass blowing, or new classes at my gym.
Creative
Bring on the crafts. Sewing (I already know I want to get into dressmaking), quilting, crocheting. I might add some needlepoint there as well. Walmart has these great kits that teach you and YouTube can teach you anything you want to know these days.
Educational
I love learning things. So museums are going to be the majority of this section. I also love memoirs, so I’m going to read at least one during this month. (Funny that it was a memoir that sparked this journey for me). I’d love to hear other suggestions, though, as this category is looking a little sparse.
Local
When I brought this project up to a friend, she recommended going through your hometown like a tourist. I live in the DFW metroplex and there’s tons of touristy stuff to do. I just don’t make the time to do it. This is going to change.
Sports
I know this month is going to be in February. Because the Super Bowl! I’m already looking forward to the giant party I’m going to host. I also love hockey, baseball, basketball, and any sport really. I love sports. I love live sports, even better.
Favorite
I know this month goes last because it’s going to be a general month of reflection. Things that I know I like to do for fun, and hopefully, some new fun things will fill this month. I’m excited to see how it all pans out.
Conclusion
Overall, I like where this is going. I’m going to try a bunch of new things, some old things, and we’ll see what sticks. At the end of it, I want to say that I created a routine of fun.
What say you, dear reader? How would you organize your Year of Fun?

You’re so sweet! Hope you enjoy following along on my journey.
You may want to Google “artist dates.” Julia Cameron (author of THE ARTIST’S WAY) encourages people to go out once a week for an hour or two on a solo play date. The idea is slightly different than what you’re after here–her idea is that artists need to refill their creative well. Still, seeking out some information about that might give you some more ideas.
I’ve been trying to date my artist since the start of the year. I’ve definitely missed some weeks, and not every date has been solo, but overall it’s been really good for me.
Amanda, I haven’t heard of those. I’ll have to check them out! And read the book. I’m loving digging into books as I start this project! And she seems like she would be an excellent read. You’ll have to tell me more about dating your inner artist!
