A Few Months into My Year of Fun: A Recap
I’m several months into my Year of Fun experiment, and I have to say, I’m enjoying myself. I’m riding horses again. I’m learning to sew. I’m planning parties. I’m traveling more. I’m giving myself an enjoyable time – despite the post-COVID hellscape we currently live in. And it’s nothing like I’d expected it to be.
My original goal with this experiment was to try one fun thing a month and see how that turned out. Well, I haven’t been doing that. Instead, I’ve focused on two things that I love: horseback riding (an old love) and sewing (a new one). My fun budget is going to those two activities.
Every time I ride a horse, it’s $50-$65, depending on the kind of lesson. And sewing, well, let’s just laugh at how expensive that is. On top of all the materials I need, I spend $60 a couple times a month to meet my sewing mentor. The dress I’m working on now has two sessions of work in it, and I’m expecting to need a third. Oh, I bought $30 of fabric for the dress as well.
Moral of the story: fun costs. And that’s been one of my biggest challenges. It’s hard to spend money on fun things. So I go back to things I know I enjoy. I’m going to be better next month by trying new things. I just find myself gravitating toward tried and true hobbies. And I’m okay with that.
What are your tried and true hobbies?
