Now, I guess I’m baristaFI?

This week has been insane. I almost decided to skip my weekly blog update, but since I’m finally gaining momentum, that didn’t seem like the best move.

We’re halfway through our early vote initiative at my fellowship, and I’m so ready to have a break. It’s exhilarating and wonderful. We’re poll greeting and block walking and phone banking. And I love it – but this week has exhausted my poor little introvert self. I can see a career in this field, as long as I routinely build in self care. None of the two other professional jobs I’ve had left me feeling that way, so this is a big, exciting change.

What about the money, money money?

Funny you should ask. Mr. Moriah is still job hunting. We’re hoping something (anything) full time pops up, (and if you have any leads in the Ft. Worth area HIT US UP!). He’s had a few promising interviews, but mostly it’s been radio silence on the job market. I’m sure he’ll come across something. I’m a little frustrated at the job market and the ghosting culture that employers around here use.

It’s so weird. He’s had two companies offer him a verbal “we’d love to hire you”, and then we never hear back. Even after calling, going to the office, and emailing. Nothing. If you’re a hiring manager, I suggest not using this practice, as it’s frustrating and unprofessional.

We’ve revamped his resume. Twice. And he’s been applying for jobs daily. his  goal is full time employment in a social services field. I’ve accepted Starbuck’s offer letter, and we’ll have a bit of money trickling in, so allowing him to find a full time job will be well worth the wait. On average, it takes three to six months to find employment. We know it’s a lot to be expecting a job already. But the faster he finds one, the faster we can start saving again, and the happier I will be.

For now, though, I’m finally gainfully employed.

Today, I drove to Starbucks for my orientation. You heard that right, I’m BaristaFI. Okay, not actually. We’re no where NEAR having enough saved to live just off of part-time jobs with benefits, but it’s nice to coast for a bit.

But wow, orientation was a lot. I start next week, although I was able to get Tuesday off for the primaries (if you’re in a super Tuesday state – GO VOTE!) so that I can help at the polls. It’s an exciting time to be alive.

Anyway, I am far and away astounded at how amazing the benefits package is at Starbucks. It was a really hard decision choosing between a part-time administrative role at $12/hr that had the potential to turn into a career and part-time barista at $9.50/hr to cover the gap while I’m at a fellowship. But the flexible schedule and bikeable location, along with the crazy extensive benefits package answered that question for me.

I’m loving the benefits and starting to rebuild our savings.

Starbucks was far and away the best choice. Even as a part-time employee, I receive free coffee, free food, incredible discounts, free spotify, headspace, and short-term therapy, subsidized health, vision, dental, a 401(k) with a 5 percent match fully vested immediately and stock. And those are just the benefits I’m intending on utilizing. The employee handbook covers so many more.

While I wait for benefit eligibility, I’m not putting off saving. Even though I’m not making a ton of money (less than $1,000 a month) I’m still having a portion of my paycheck transferred to my online saving’s account. It’s not a lot – less than the money I used to save – but it’s building up that saving muscle and keeping us practicing what we preach.

Overall, I feel really happy to be working with a company that aligns with both my environmental and my socially equitable values. And I mean, I get hang around coffee all day. What’s not to love?

Why on earth are those companies saying “we’d love to hire you” if they’re not on the verge of making an offer??? That’s a bizarre and thoughtless choice. Fingers are crossed for a good match to surface soon.

I love hearing that Starbucks treats its employees so well. I imagine just the offset costs of coffee and food could knock a big chunk off your weekly spending.Any opportunity to move up the ladder there, or is that something you’d ever have interest in?

    • Moriah Joy on February 25, 2020 at 11:17 am

They treat their employees so, so well. I’m in kind of a holding pattern in my life. Starbucks is a good place to help sort through where I’m headed.

I’m also working a fellowship that has huge career potential. But it’s a high risk, high reward situation – so I don’t know if it will turn into anything more than an amazing summer experience.

But there is room for growth at Starbucks, and it’s something I’m considering because the benefits package is so good. But I haven’t worked there long enough to make any sort of life decisions.

So, to answer your question, I don’t know.

I’m following your blog with interest. My daughter and her husband are currently living in the DFW area. He works part-time right now at the Amazon fulfillment center, and is looking for full-time, living-wage work.

Anyhow, good luck in your hubby’s job search and enjoy the barista job. The benefits do sound incredible!

Tell your folks I say hi! Job hunting in this market is sooo bizarre. I wish them luck.

I’m working on a full write-up about our hunt, but I’m waiting for Mr. Moriah to find something permanent before I finalize my thoughts.
